Make a Real Difference Every Day!
Are you passionate about empowering vulnerable adults and helping them lead independent, safe, and dignified lives? If so, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for! Join us and be part of a team that truly values your contribution to transforming lives in our community.
At Sandwell council we believe in a supportive and inclusive culture where collaboration thrives. You’ll work alongside dedicated professionals who share your commitment to providing outstanding care and support to those who need it most. Every day brings new challenges—and the chance to make a meaningful impact.
About the Role
This is more than a driving job — it’s a lifeline. As a Meals on Wheels Driver, you’ll be the vital link between our kitchen and the homes of those who rely on us for nourishment, safety, and human connection. You’ll be delivering hot, freshly prepared meals to individuals who may be elderly, disabled, or recovering from illness — people who often live alone and look forward to your visit as a highlight of their day.
Your presence matters. You’re not just dropping off food — you’re offering a warm smile, a moment of conversation, and a watchful eye that could make all the difference. You’ll be trained to spot signs of concern and know how to respond appropriately, ensuring that every delivery is also a wellbeing check.
Job Summary:
- A valid Category B driving licence — allowing you to drive small vans safely and legally
- Confidence behind the wheel — with solid driving skills and a good knowledge of the local area
- Ability to use a sat nav or navigation app — ensuring efficient route planning and timely deliveries
- Physical capability for manual handling tasks — such as transferring insulated food containers and battery packs onto trollies and into vehicles
- A caring and compassionate nature — with a genuine desire to support vulnerable individuals in Sandwell’s community
- Strong communication skills — able to engage warmly and respectfully with service users
- Reliability and punctuality — committed to delivering meals on time and maintaining consistency
- Calmness under pressure — capable of handling unexpected situations with composure
- Flexibility — willing to adapt to changing needs and schedules
- Attention to detail — especially around food safety, service user wellbeing, and record keeping
In this role, you will:
- Deliver meals promptly and safely across a designated route
- Build rapport with clients, offering kindness and respect at every doorstep
- Observe and report any concerns about a client’s health or environment
- Maintain hygiene and food safety standards during transport
- Keep accurate records of deliveries and interactions as needed
You’ll be working 8 hours every other weekend, which works out at 4hours a week. This role is ideal for someone seeking meaningful weekend work that fits around other commitments.
